Healthy Personality

As I was completing my continuing education requirements studying the topic of a healthy personality, I was fascinated by all the opinions of many Humanistic Psychologists that postulated what makes a personality healthy. I was struck by 2 points that they all appeared to agreed with. Before I get into the conditions, I would like to mention that all men can live a life of psychological health, regardless of personal history. The only damaging and discouraging attitude is when one thinks that it’s not possible for him.

Personality, as it’s been said by those traditional dinosaurian Psychologists, is who we are. I beg to differ along with my more enlightened deceased colleagues. When a man lives from a place of psychological health he realizes that he is more than his personal and genetic history. There is a Spiritual aspect to man that transcends his perceived “self”. This Spiritual aspect is who we are, even though we may not be able to explain it clearly. It’s beneficial that we cannot, for if we explain the Spiritualness of who we are, are we not just reducing ourselves to another idea and concept? Is not that self-limiting in and of itself?

Can man have a healthy personality and Spiritual wakefulness? Absolutely! In fact, they are one in the same.

For a man to have a healthy personality, he must be “firmly anchored” in the present. He must not identify himself with his past. His past is only conditioned, and therefore not who he is. If a man identifies himself with his past, he severely limits himself with the thoughts and opinions that came before him which includes all the judgments, criticisms, and “shoulds”. Living in past and future is certainly not conducive to a healthy personality.

The second aspect of a healthy personality, is that it’s natural. It’s a natural process for us to grow and expand into new dimensions. Only when we listen to our mental talk, do we stunt our growth. It’s no wonder that many men feel discouraged and out of step with life when they heed the mental noise of self limitation. It’s as if those brothers have cut themselves off from the life force that says grow and expand by pouring water on the Spiritual inferno that burns within them.

By living in the present we expand and naturally grow both in a healthy personality and Spiritual awakening. Only by allowing life to spring forth within us can we experience the abundance that is as close to us as our breath.

To your healthy personality my brother,

Andrew
